Nick Gibb visits Bognor's specialist fridge manufacturer, Polestar Cooling

Nick Gibb MP visited Polestar Cooling Limited, based in the Southern Cross Industrial Estate in Bognor Regis, together with Dr Seth Berkley, the chief executive of the Geneva based international vaccine organisation, GAVI (Global Alliance for Vaccines & Immunisation) and Susan Elden, a senior civil servant from the Department for International Development.

GAVI was established in 2000 and since then has vaccinated more than 700 million children worldwide in some of the world’s poorest countries. They are funded by private philanthropists, charitable trusts and governments worldwide, including the UK government.

Polestar Cooling Limited is a specialist fridge manufacturer that produces fridges for storing vaccines. These are highly specified fridges that are able to keep temperatures between the ranges needed to ensure the vaccines remain alive, as well as ensuring they can be used in areas of the world with intermittent or no electrical power and in very hot or inhospitable climates. Polestar work with Dulas Limited, a renewable energy company based in Wales, to produce solar panels that can power these fridges.

Polestar produces about 2,000 fridges a year, and employs 19 people.

Polestar are currently building 500 fridges for urgent export to Yemen to vaccinate children exposed to the cholera epidemic.

Nick Gibb said: “We can be proud that Bognor Regis is the base for Polestar Cooling, which has developed a specialist expertise in refrigeration for the storage of vaccines for use in some of the hottest and most remote corners of the world. Despite its size, Polestar is helping millions of children obtain the vaccines they need to survive.

“The fact that Dr Seth Berkeley, CEO of the Geneva based international vaccine organisation, GABI, came all the way to Bognor Regis to see the manufacturing process himself is testament to the high regard in which Polestar is held in this highly specialised field.”
