I am greatly concerned about the appalling service and continuing strike action on Southern Rail which has been causing severe problems for residents of Bognor Regis and Littlehampton commuting into London and travelling around the South. The current situation is unacceptable. I understand that many constituents are frustrated and angry about the service they have received.
I have attended meetings with other MPs and the Secretary of State for Transport as well as with managers from Southern, most recently, Angela Doll, the Passenger Services Director of Southern. Please be assured that Ministers continue to work towards a solution to the continuing delays and strike action as a priority.
The strike action by the RMT and now ASLEF is unjustified. The independent rail safety regulator has ruled that the use of Driver Only Operation on Southern is safe and conductors will move into an on-board supervisor role to focus instead of customer service and helping passengers who require assistance. The staff affected by this have all signed the new contract allowing them to move over into the new role, effective from 1 January 2017 which makes the strike action even more inexplicable.
I am pleased that the Government have announced that Southern rail passengers will be repaid the equivalent of a month’s travel to go some way to compensate for the disruption they have suffered. More information about this can be found on Southern Rail’s Delay Repay website.
